Always to be remember, that healing arts is not for the bodies - just bodies - but is for minds and hearts. Mind the heart and mind, mine students, and mend the body better.
— Doctor Zieger in Heather's flashback, Ember's End, pg. 198

Doctor Zeiger is the former head doctor at Cloud Mountain.

The Green Ember

Doctor Zeiger is mentioned by Lord Rake as complimenting Emma's progression as an apprentice. He later examines Smalls after the young buck is injured at Helmer's tree. After asking Emma to cover for him while he leaves to attend to a fever outbreak at Blackstone Citadel, he agrees to examine Picket's injured foot as well. Heather Longtreader expresses interest in becoming a medic, but learns that she won't be taken on until Doctor Zeiger returns and finishes with the current apprentices.

Emma also notes that Doctor Zeiger is from a distant area of Natalia, apparently even further away from Cloud Mountain than Nick Hollow.

The Last Archer

Doctor Zeiger is mentioned by Emma as she tends to Jo Shanks.

Potter's War

Note: Because Potter's War has yet to be publicly released, Doctor Zeiger's role in the story shall not be disclosed on this wiki. Should S. D. Smith ever choose to publish Potter's War, a complete summary shall be added. Thank you.

Ember Falls

When Heather returns to Cloud Mountain to tell Emma of her royal heritage, she meets Doctor Zeiger, who tells her where Emma is.

Ember Rising

Doctor Zeiger greets Picket after he awakes following the Battle for First Warren, and informs him of Coleden Blackstar and Jo Shanks' status. He also lets Picket know that his injuries will not prevent him from walking, though he comments that "Picket One-Leggy" would have been a nice addition to Heather's stories.

Ember's End

While searching for Smalls in the Tomb of Lander's Dragons, Heather Longtreader recalls how she had first met Jone Wissel in a lecture by Doctor Zeiger while he visited Halfwind Citadel.

Physical appearance

Doctor Zeiger is a large brown rabbit with long, wispy, white hair, and a strange accent. One of his ears is bent sideways, while the other points toward the sky. He is often dressed in white and wears glasses that circle huge, wild eyes, one of which looks the wrong way. Heather feels that Zeiger's appearance is misleading as to his ability, as he looks rather absurd for a respected physician.

  • S. D. Smith listed Doctor Zeiger as being one of his most amusing characters.[1]
