— King Gerrard as quoted by King Whitson Mariner, The Black Star of Kingston

King Gerrard was the last king of the rabbits of Golden Coast and the immediate predecessor of King Whitson Mariner.

Biography[]

Reign[]

King Gerrard had at one point hoped to reestablish the old tradition of the ruler of the rabbits passing the Green Ember on to their heir, to make succession to the throne clear. Unfortunately, Gerrard was left with no blood heir after his only son died. As such, he chose Whitson to succeed him, and conferred upon him various relics including the Crown of Flames, the sword of Flint, the Ruling Stone, and the Stone Book of Fay. In passing on the sword, Gerrard described it as "a deadly relic" that he and his forebears had safeguarded; Whitson would later express the belief that Gerrard himself was unaware of the true meaning behind his warning.

Gerrard then remained behind on Golden Coast when Whitson led the escape from invading enemies. He led a force of old bucks - including Lord Whit, Jon Blackstar, Galt's father, and Mother Saramack's husband - in holding off the invaders to enable the escape of Whitson's fleet.

The Wreck and Rise of Whitson Mariner[]

King Gerrard was mentioned by King Whitson Mariner.

Prince Lander & the Dragon War[]

King Gerrard was mentioned by King Whitson as he discussed the lost history of the Stone Sword of Flint. Lander also recalled hearing from his father of encounters between Gerrard and the Drekkers. Mother Saramack would also mention him on two occasions, noting that he-like his predecessors-failed to make an effort to understand the Drekkers. She would also recall how her husband joined him and the other old bucks in sacrificing themselves in order to enable Whitson's fleet to depart Golden Coast.

Ember Rising[]

King Gerrard was mentioned briefly by Helmer upon his hearing of the death of Dev Meeker's father.

Trivia[]
