WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE ARCHER'S CUP ARE AHEAD; CAUTION IS ADVISED.

[Picket] took several pleasant walks around the warren. It was like Halfwind, though it felt more old-fashioned. The warren was dark and deep, dirt-lined, with little stone. It was like going back in time to their ancestors' communities. But inside many of the dens, amazing work was being carried out. He saw potential innovations for the battlefield that made him want to spend a month there, learning.

Harbone Citadel is one of the secret citadels of the Heralds of the Mended Wood. Its crest is a white tree blooming seven yellow stars on a field of green. Harbone Citadel is known for the incredible inventions its inhabitants create and for having incredible archers.

History[]

Founding[]

Like the other secret citadels, Harbone was established after the murder of King Jupiter, with Lord Hews as its first lord. Following the third Citadel Congress, Harbone—the closest citadel to First Warren—volunteered to undertake preparations for the eventual Retaking of First Warren. Harbone's archers gained a particular reputation for their excellence, with only the Bracers of Halfwind Citadel rivaling their abilities.

The Green Ember[]

Wilfred Longtreader made a brief visit to Harbone prior to the Citadel Congress at Cloud Mountain. He reported to Smalls that Harbone's residents feared that their destruction is imminent, and further reported that they lacked trust in him due to his association with Garten Longtreader.

The Last Archer[]

The prowess of the Harbone archers was touched upon by both Nate Flynn and Clay Fletcher. An embassy from Harbone attended the Cloud Mountain congress, and the soldiers participated in the Battle for Cloud Mountain, with one archer firing a shot that saved Jo Shanks from a wolf.

The First Fowler/Ember Falls[]

When Jo woke up in the hospital, Emma told him that she was going to Harbone Citadel, where there was an outbreak of Blue Fever and they needed her help. During a conference at Cloud Mountain, Emma begged Prince Smalls to let her go help at Harbone.

Heather notes that Emma rose in the ranks when she went to Harbone for an outbreak of Blue Fever that had killed many of Harbone's doctors. Emma had done wonders and survived, and she received a reputation for being a brave and excellent doctor.

Before going into First Warren, Helmer and Picket told Cole and Jo that they would send word through Harbone Citadel. Helmer and Picket travel to Harbone Citadel, but on their way are shot at by archers, which they presume to be Harboners. Helmer notes that Harbone archers never miss, and wonders what they were shooting at. When Helmer and Picket arrived at Harbone, Helmer called the code 'A friend of the Mending' into Harbone's gate, an iron enclosure over a hole leading deep into the ground. While it was an old code, Helmer demanded to be let in, and they were met by Dev Meeker and some other soldiers. Lord Hewson later granted Helmer and Picket the full liberty of Harbone, something that was apparently a high honor. Lord Hewson informs the two that the Harboners are nearly trapped by the wild wolf packs that menace the area.

The Harboners had been trying to enter First Warren for much time, but each attempt had failed. They agreed to try again after hearing Emerson's idea concerning glider capes. The Harboners were reluctant at first, but bent their forces toward the project and created hundreds of weapons each day. They became more committed as time went on. When there was an opportunity, they created a diversion with bowstrikers and Helmer and Picket were able to safely enter First Warren. However, Lord Hewson and many of the citadel's inhabitants died defending against a wild wolf pack following this operation.

Emma, Cole, Heyna, and Jo go to Blackstone Citadel, planning to rejoin the rest of their group at Harbone later. Lokson tells that he was sent to Harbone Citadel for what was called his education but what he believed was his exile. Jo Shanks tells Lokson that Nate Flynn is the best archer from Halfwind and could even compete with the legendary Harbone archers. Jo notices that Cheltham has both Blackstone's crest and Harbone's on his bracer. Jo knows Cheltham as one of the best of the elite archers of Harbone Citadel. Lokson tells Jo that his personal guard is made up of Harbone archers. Lokson tells Emma that she is beloved to everyone at Harbone, and Jo remembers that Emma had gone to Harbone when there was an outbreak of Blue Fever, and risked her life to save hundreds. Emma recalls that at the time Lokson had been far away, telling him that in Harbone Citadel there was a rumor that Lokson was in the mountains beyond Corby, training his own army.

Lord Ronan introduces Amber to Emma and her band, saying that her father is the lord of Harbone Citadel, Lord Hewson. Amber told Emma that she was forever grateful to her, as she had brought hope with her when she had come to Harbone, saving so many and lifting a burden from the Hewson family. Jo later asks Amber if she misses Harbone, to which she replies that while she does, she has been trained to expect hardship for the cause. Nate Flynn tells Jo that the Harbone archers could easily beat them is the Ultimate Archer's Cup, and Mac also tells Jo that he needs to watch out for the Harboners.

Many inhabitants of Harbone Citadel participate in the Battle for First Warren.

Ember's End[]

In preparation for the Siege of First Warren, the most vulnerable citizens of First Warren were evacuated to Harbone Citadel. Unfortunately, while Wilfred was leading the last evacuees there, the citadel was attacked by the forces of Longtreader Command, several Lords of Prey, and the remains of the Wild Wolf Pack. The citadel was left a ruin, and many rabbits were slain, though the arrival of the Fowlers and Wilfred prevented a total massacre. The survivors returned to First Warren, where news of the attack proved particularly motivating to the surviving soldiers of Harbone as they prepared for the end of the War for All Natalia. Afterwards, the capital of Newcity was established halfway between First Warren and the site of the destroyed Harbone.
