WARNING: SPOILERS FOR PRINCE LANDER & THE DRAGON WAR ARE AHEAD; CAUTION IS ADVISED.

My son, my dear young buck, we are not of Gan and Shambler. We are heirs of Flint and Fay. That is your story, son.

Flint Firstking was the husband of Fay and the father of rabbitkind. He and Fay made the first leaping and founded rabbit culture on the Blue Moss Hills.

Biography[]

The Leaping[]

Flint, Fay, and the other Leapers originally inhabited Immovable Mountain, but were led to leave it by dreams they experienced. Having seen the Blue Moss Hills on the other side of a wide chasm, Flint and Fay led the way to them by leaping across a set of Seven Standing Stones.[1] Upon arriving at the hills, they discovered that the blue they had seen was not the hills' moss, but Firstflower. Eating these flowers gave Flint, Fay, and their companions heightened health and intelligence, allowing them to develop language and granting them long life.[2]

Flint became the first king of rabbits, and reigned over his growing community with Fay by his side. However, their peaceful existence ended with the arrival of Firstfoe. To combat this menace, Flint wielded the Stone Sword of Flint, but how he came to possess it was lost to history. A number of rabbits later left the Blue Moss Hills and traveled to Golden Coast, where the line of kings continued and treasured artifacts such as the sword and the Stone Book of Fay.[3]

Legacy[]

The Dragon War[]

Whitson Mariner mentioned Flint and Fay to his son Lander, noting that their family was Flint's descendants and not akin to Gan and Shambler.[3] Flint was also mentioned in connection with the Stone Sword, as well as a prophecy made by Fay regarding the sword's breaking at the time of the Mending.[4]

Flint and Fay were mentioned as having left Immovable Mountain. Mother Saramack and some other wise rabbits believed that the story they had of Flint might not be complete, and that Flint's fall was connected with using the starsword. King Whitson feared that the starsword might, in the end, use the user, and that this might have happened to Flint.

Chief Heckle told Prince Lander that the reason the Drekkers did not leave the other Trekkers was because they remembered old oaths made by their ancestors, oaths to Flint, Fay, and their heirs, forever. It was mentioned that King Whitson and Prince Lander were Flint and Fay's heirs. After unburying the starsword, King Lander confessed to Fleck Blackstar that the starsword seemed to be compelling him to spy on Prince Lemual to see where he buried the antidote to the memory tonic. Fleck complimented Lander's courage in admitting this, and Lander said that he could not let his pride what had barely begun.[5]

The War for All Natalia[]

Centuries later, Flint and Fay were honored by the votaries of Halfwind Citadel as "holy ancestors touched by divinity." Lord Ramnor had a painting of the pair hanging in his ready room, and it was one of the few items not removed when Bleston assumed command of the citadel. Kylen later looked at the painting, noting and that Flint was proactive and changed the world by his actions. Tameth Seer claimed that Kylen is like Flint, with the responsibility to reshape the world by his own deeds.[1]

In a conversation with Hame Smith and Lord Hewson of Harbone Citadel, Picket Longtreader discussed the starsword. As Hame revealed, Flint was considered rabbitkind's first smith, though it was unclear whether he actually forged the sword with his considerable strength or broke up the meteorite that contained it. When the Tunneler compared Heather Longtreader to Fay and she objected, he noted sadly that "her Flint", Prince Smalden Joveson, was lost to her. Later, in Akolan on Victory Day, a desperate Heather wished that Flint would appear wielding his sword to combat the Lords of Prey.[6]

Flint and Fay's history was further discussed when Emma Joveson visited Missy Dreft, who revealed many forgotten details about Firstflower to the princess. During the Siege of First Warren, Flint's distant heir Smalls—his life having been saved by Heather—confronted Morbin Blackhawk with the starsword. He declared himself the heir of Flint Firstking, and wielded his ancestor's sword in bringing an end to the Last Foe.[2]

Physical appearance[]

Flint possessed great physical strength, so much that legend indicates he was able to either stoke a fire that could shape the unbreakable ore needed to forged the starsword, or else was able to break away the rock shell surrounding it.[6]

Personality and traits[]

Flint was noted by Kylen to be an ambitious and proactive ruler.[1]
